Someday I wish to Wave a Different Flag

Today is the Philippine Independence Day. I see flags all over the Metro. My grandmother has even posted a flag on our gates. It kind of feels good to feel the nationalism in the country. I feel a little bit of pride fluttering in my heart. However, one day, I wish I could wave a different flag, and post it on my door. Then I would feel a bigger pride in my heart. Book Review: Metropolitan Lovers, the Homosexuality of Cities

Book Review on Literature and LGBT Studies Professor Julie Abraham's book "Metropolitan Lovers". This post was written by RBP team member line of flight from Sampaloc Toc . Julie Abraham is an American professor of literature and LGBT studies. Abraham's book is an interesting look at the connection between the idea of the "city" and homosexual identity -- lesbian and gay. I must admit up front that I found the book to be very Euro-American centric and failed to address the relation of the city and sexuality to colonialism and imperialism or test her theories of that relationship to the conscious city creating in colonized places. Because of this, I found a lot of the book boring and tedious to read. But, if you're into urban studies or European lesbian nineteenth century history or Oscar Wilde, you'll likely find this book much more interesting. That being said, the book got me thinking of Benedict Anderson's highly controversial Under Three Fla...

The Lesbian Blogger Experience

by the lesfriendly girl I was a lesbian first, a blogger next. But that’s because I’ve always been a lesbian. Since I was born, even. I was a blogger when the social networking Multiply got famous. I first started posting personal blogs, then eventually what people would call “spam” – advertisements for events, sales and what-have-you for my lesbians organizations: Lunduyan ng Sining and GALANG (Gay and Lesbian Activist Network for Gender Equality). And then came the idea of blogging specifically for a lesbian target audience and setting up a separate site for it. I can say that Rainbow Bloggers inspired me – I saw them at the 2008 TFP Pride March stage and I had the most selfish motive to be up there with them (the selfishness has gone now that I’m a Rainbow Blogger *cough*). So I set up lesfriendly.com - my blog that talks about anything lesbian that pops into my mind. Anyway, fast forward to now, being a lesbian blogger has its perks. Due to the rarity of public Philippine lesbi...

Lesbian to Be Iceland's First Female PM

The world's first openly gay leader is poised to take power in Iceland with the appointment of a lesbian former flight attendant as Prime Minister following the mass-resignation of the country's government. Johanna Sigurdardottir, 66, is to become interim leader until new elections are held in May following the fall of the administration of Geir Haarde amid huge public protests about the country's economic crisis. The country's social affairs minister, Ms Sigurdardottir has been installed as head of an interim centre-left coalition featuring her Social Democratic Alliance and the Left-Green movement. "She is a senior parliamentarian, she is respected and loved by all of Iceland," said Environment Minister Thorunn Sveinbjarnardottir, a fellow Alliance party member. The new leader is known for allocating generous amounts of public funding to help the disabled, the elderly and organizations tackling domestic violence. http://news.aol.com

The Launch of the First Lesbian Magazine in the Philippines: My Femme Magazine

Cover of the Pilot Issue A lot of lesbians, from different ages, kinds, shapes and sizes, gathered at the Sir William's Hotel Functon Room in Timog Ave, Quezon City to celebrate the launch of the first lesbian magazine in the Philippines which is My Femme Magazine (MFM). My girlfriend and I were among the first people to be there and got ourselves free shots of tequila while waiting for the program to start. Entrance was free (but the drinks weren't ;) ) and the program started around 10:30 pm. It was actually like a normal exclusive party for lesbians, however there are some men who were there (I'm not just sure if they're friends of the organizers or gays?). There were dance numbers, games and models. We got the chance to choose the next My Femme cover girl for the next issue by voting the models of our choice. Opening Dance Number Who will be the next My Femme Cover Girl? Time for the butches to shine! The magazine will be released every 2 months, I am just not sure ...
